PN: Being a social sponge expands your horizons

Reference: R: Mastery by Robert Greene p. 71, 74

Another goal of the apprenticeship (besides developing your expertise) is building your social skills or your soft skills. These abilities will help you navigate through your professional life, which is, as you will realize, as much about soft skills as it is about hard skills.

People you will encounter are like small worlds that you can explore. Their experiences, knowledge, viewpoints, character will expand your horizons. Your goal, during your apprenticeship, is to absorb as much of those worlds as you can. You must act like a sponge soaking up everything that surrounds you.

To make this process as effective as possible, during this period you must set aside your views and preconceptions about truth and morality and try to uncritically dive deep into the environment. The more you open up, the more you'll be able to absorb. The more perspectives you soak up the more your mind will expand. Each person you interact with will provide you with an additional lens you're able to look at the world (related: PN: You need external input for serendipity).

To help you open up you must adopt a child-like attitude towards others. You must accept that you're dependent on them and that you crave their thoughts and feelings about different stuff. This will help you meet as many perspectives as possible. Each new perspective you acquire will expand your mind. After some time it will redefine the limits of your apparent world.

PN: What is the adjacent possible: each new perspective expands the limits of what is possible. The more new information you absorb, the more possibilities will lay in front of you.

As an example, when you enter a new job, you should say yes to everything. You should take part in all company events. You should attend all parties. Be present on optional meetings. Do optional tasks like refurnishing the office or helping to move heavy things. You should take all tasks and requests for help you get. More, you should ask others if they need some help and gladly welcome any jobs they want you to perform.

PN: Apprenticeship is the way to learn new skills

People. Every person is a universe in itself. No matter if you like them or not, you can learn tones from their perspectives, experiences, and knowledge. Abraham Lincoln once said, "I learn from everybody, even if sometimes it’s what not to do."
