P: Become happy in the modern environment

We didn't evolve for the modern, technology-saturated, environment full of extreme stimuli and excess like constant news, video games, social media, sugar on demand, drugs, porn, etc. Mother nature created us to derive pleasure from small, steady, and frequent rewards. For tens of thousand of years we gained most of our pleasure from food, water, and sex. (more: P: Mediocristan and Extremistan)

That's why many of us become overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed often resorting to different forms of escape like alcohol, porn, and social media—to things that caused their negative feelings—creating a viscous cycle.

How get out of this? How to create happiness in our modern environment? In short, you must get back to your roots, to activities our bodies evolved for. Every day:

  1. Reduce external stimuli and distractions: e.g., turn of your notifications, remove all distractions from your working environment, etc.
  1. Connect with nature: go for a walk in the forest/park, stare at the leaves blowing in the wind, play with your pet, etc.
  1. Connect with the tribe: hug someone, meet with friends/family, etc. (related: P: Relationships are everything)
  1. Connect with your body: start your day with a walk, work out for at least 5 min, play sports, etc.
  1. Lower the intensity of pleasure

Mother Nature created us to derive happiness from a steady flow of pleasant small, but frequent rewards. Most of our satisfaction for thousands of years came from food, water, and sex.

So, you need to consciously control yourself with other hedonic experiences, because you will want them frequently and you'll be quickly satisfied. The intensity of the pleasure (and potential harm) is disproportionally less impactful than the frequency.

This also shows how to be happy. Reduce the intensity of pleasures (NSD) and have them frequently. The key here is to keep them natural. If you have intensive synthetic pleasures they will make you miserable cuz you won't be able to get pleasure from things that naturally give you pleasure and that are healthy for us.

  1. Understand that when you're residing in Extremistan you're going to meet friction in the form of lack of visible progress. Here the growth mindset—taking pleasure from friction—is of great help. Also, reminding yourself that in Extremistan results come from compound interest which requires time, attaining a long term mindset will help.
